Following the success of last year, the North West London Sector & Q Medical are again delivering a series of webinars focussing on CAWR techniques and management strategies. Using a combination of video presentations, didactic lectures, case studies and interactive discussions, our experienced faculty will progress the conversation on surgical technique, patient selection, complications and salvage as well as focus on the CAWR MDT and service development.

Mr Janindra Warusavitarne BMed FRACS PhD
Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at St Mark’s Hospital

Mr Janindra Warusavitarne is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon who joined St Mark’s Hospital in 2010. Prior to his appointment at St Mark’s Hospital he was a consultant surgeon in Sydney Australia where he did most of his training. He has a speciality interest in inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal rehabilitation, pelvic floor surgery, surgery for early cancer and hernia surgery. He has extensive experience in Complex Abdominal Wall Reconstructive surgery and is looking forward to chairing this CAWR Webinar Series.

Janindra has clinical, educational and research experience and has published many articles in peer reviewed journals and written book chapters. He is the lead surgeon for inflammatory bowel diseases at St Mark’s Hospital and is part of the executive team conducting the European Board qualification for colorectal surgery.


Mr Oliver Warren BSC (Hons) MBBS (Hons) MD (Res) FRCS (Gen.Surg.)
Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

Mr Oliver Warren was appointed a Consultant in Colorectal and General Surgery at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London in 2015. He established the Complex Abdominal Wall Reconstruction MDT at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in 2016 which has since discussed over a hundred cases. He has developed a large tertiary hernia practice since. Along with colleagues and his research fellow he has an active research programme investigating the peri-operative care of this complex patient cohort.

Oliver qualified from Imperial College London in 2001. He gained his Doctorate in 2009 from Imperial College London and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2012, for which he was awarded the ASGBI Gold Medal for Outstanding Performance. Prior to becoming a consultant, he undertook colorectal surgery fellowships at St. Mark’s Hospital, London, the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney and was the 2013 Association of Coloproctology’s visiting fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA. He lives in London with his wife and daughter.


Mr Akash Mehta MD
Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at St Mark’s Hospital

Mr Akash Mehta is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at St Mark’s Hospital. He qualified in Medicine at Leiden University in Leiden, the Netherlands and subsequently trained in surgery at VU Medical Centre in Amsterdam, with an elective rotation in Surgical Oncology at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He successfully completed senior clinical fellowships in advanced colorectal surgery at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam (peritoneal malignancy, advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer), the Peritoneal Malignancy Institute Basingstoke (peritoneal malignancy) and finally worked as MiMICC (Minimally and Maximally Invasive Colorectal Cancer) Fellow and Resident Surgical Officer at St Mark’s Hospital.

Akash was appointed as Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in 2019. His primary clinical interests, apart from advanced colorectal cancer, are Intestinal Failure & Rehabilitation Surgery, surgery for enteric fistulae, complex abdominal wall pathology as well as the management of serious complications of previous abdominal surgery and CAWR.


Miss Alexandra Murray MBChB MD FRCS(Plast)
Plastic Surgeon at Stoke Mandeville Hospital

Miss Alexandra Murray is a consultant plastic and burns surgeon at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, and the clinical lead for burns surgery. She completed training in London and Yorkshire and then went on to undertake microsurgical, reconstructive and burns fellowships in Australia. Since working in Stoke Mandeville as a consultant for the last 5 years, one aspect of her clinical work has been alongside general surgery colleagues performing reconstructions for abdominal wall and perineal defects.

As part of her developing practice, Alex is keen to build an AWR MDT service at her trust. Both in her burns reconstructive work and in the variety of other patients requiring functional reconstruction, Alex has a broad experience in utilising biological matrices and looks forward to being part of the CAWR webinar series.

CAWR Webinar 1

A focus on patient selection, the MDT approach and perioperative management, with insights into the Delphi consensus from Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. This will then be followed by a deep dive into Rives-Stoppa technique, tips and tricks.

CAWR Webinar 2

In this session we will take a closer look at patient optimisation; how to manage those high-risk factors and importantly when to say no. This week’s technique will be ACS accompanied by case study discussion and video.

CAWR Webinar 3

In our third and final webinar of the series, our faculty will discuss the role of flaps and botox, as well as salvage using MDT case studies. Participants are encouraged to bring their own cases and experiences for panel discussion.
